“Zamalek 157+: Zamalek Heritage Revival Festival” is a community-led festival founded by Inas Tewfik. The festival, first of its kind, aims to safeguard and revive Zamalek’s unique historical and cultural heritage by transforming local residents from passive observers into active guardians of their neighborhood’s identity. The number 157 refers to the start of urbanisation and creation of the district of Zamalek, earmarked by the inauguration of the Gezira Palace in 1869 — the oldest building still existing in Zamalek. The festival includes six core activities, delivered mostly free of charge: 1. “Zamalek History Tour: From Royal Gardens to Residential District” 2. “Zamalek Architecture Tour: Stories of Stone and People” 3. “Negotiating Zamalek’s Green Space: A Tale of Three Historical Gardens (Al-Andalus, Al-Masala and Al-Zohreya)” 4. “Zamalek Public Arts Tour” 5. “Kayaking the Nile: A Zamalek View” 6. “Closing Ceremony: 157 Years of Zamalek” Note: The activity “Negotiating Zamalek’s Green Space” was previously submitted under World Cities Day 2026. It is included here as part of the integrated Zamalek 157+ Festival program. We engage the Zamalek community, heritage experts, academics, media, and artists in documenting historic villas, gardens, and public art and creating community dialogue. Date: October 8-10, 2026
