This initiative served as an educational forum to promote discussion and knowledge sharing on practical waste management from the household level. The program aimed to encourage behavioral change among families in the Ministry of Public Works environment, fostering waste sorting and reduction as everyday habits that could become a model for wider communities.
The session discussed the role of waste management at the source as a cornerstone of the circular economy and introduced key principles of household waste segregation—organic, inorganic, and residual. Participants consisted primarily of women from the MPW, including senior and middle-level officials, members of Dharma Wanita Persatuan, and representatives from the Putra Education Foundation and TK Putra schools. The event reached participants both onsite and online.
Indonesia’s cities generate significant waste, with data showing 68.5 million tons in 2021 and nearly 70 million tons in 2023, more than half originating from households. Most of this waste is still disposed of in overburdened final disposal sites (TPA). To address this challenge, the government, through the Directorate General of Human Settlements, is transforming waste management systems toward sanitary landfills and waste-to-energy facilities, in line with national targets to reduce waste by 30% and managed waste by 70% by 2025.
Women’s Talk formed part of a broader series of Urban October activities organized by the Ministry. The event underscored that behavioral change starts at home. Women play a pivotal role as agents of change by educating family members to adopt environmentally responsible habits, while children learn discipline and environmental awareness through daily practices such as waste sorting. Civil servants (ASN) were also emphasized as role models who can demonstrate sustainable practices in both professional and personal contexts.
Through this program, the MPW reaffirmed its commitment to promoting integrated and sustainable waste management through multi-sector collaboration. Women’s Talk served as a reminder that small, consistent actions taken at home contribute to broader environmental transformation and improved quality of life.
