Urban Segregation and the Racial Division of Space in Brazil

This panel will critically address the urban segregation historically experienced by Black populations in Brazil, with an emphasis on the racialized structuring of urban space and its contemporary implications. Over 1 hour and 30 minutes, Professor Thiago Trindade and researcher Ana Luísa Coelho Moreira will discuss how structural racism and exclusionary urban policies have contributed—and continue to contribute—to the territorial and social marginalization of Black communities in Brazilian cities. The activity is part of Urban Circuit 2025, directly connected to the central theme “Facing Urban Challenges: Paths to Just and Sustainable Cities”, by tackling one of the main obstacles to urban justice: the persistence of racial inequalities embedded in space. The discussion aligns with the thematic line “Reducing Urban Inequalities”, highlighting how addressing urban racial segregation is a fundamental condition for building more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable cities. The panel aims not only to diagnose the problems but also to highlight possible paths for overcoming urban inequalities from an anti-racist, decolonial perspective committed to the right to the city for all.
