The event “Urban Erosion and Climate Justice: Planning for Vulnerable Areas” will address the challenges faced by small and medium-sized cities amid worsening urban erosion and the intensification of rainfall linked to climate change. The focus will be on analyzing the structural causes of the problem in Bom Jesus das Selvas (MA), such as unplanned urban expansion, lack of adequate stormwater drainage, and occupation of fragile areas, as well as their direct impacts on housing, public infrastructure, and vulnerable communities. The event will combine technical lectures, panel discussions, and active listening sessions with affected communities, facilitating dialogue among experts, public managers, civil society, and residents. The participatory approach seeks to integrate scientific knowledge, local wisdom, and institutional commitment to formulate mitigation and adaptation strategies that are concrete, replicable, and socially just. By doing so, the initiative aims to strengthen urban resilience and promote integrated planning that places climate justice at the center of territorial decision-making.
