Cities in the global South are growing fast and haphazardly, with large swaths of city dwellers living in informal settlements and working in the informal economy. Globally, one in three urban residents has insufficient access to good-quality housing, transport, water, sanitation, or energy. This “urban services divide” can have an even greater impact on lives and long-term prospects than differences in income. In this event, the World Resources Institute (WRI) will present its newly published synthesis report Towards a More Equal City. It reveals seven crucial urban transformations in the areas of infrastructure design and delivery, service provision, data collection, urban employment, finance, land management, and governance. If put into practice, they can help to make cities more equal and unleash transformative change.
