“Songs of the Waters: Recognizing the Territory of the Almenara Laundresses” is an online event aimed at valuing the intangible cultural heritage of the laundresses of Almenara, Minas Gerais. The initiative originates from the Undergraduate Final Project of Lorenna Rocha in Architecture and Urbanism, focusing on the cultural and territorial recognition of the socio-spatial practices of women whose routines go beyond labor, becoming living expressions of resistance, collective identity, and urban appropriation.
The event features discussion circles and the presentation of audiovisual materials produced during the research, addressing themes such as heritage education, collective memory, urban planning, and female leadership. The methodology included affective mapping, discussion circles, and workshops with the Choir, revealing perceptions of the city and its silent struggle against invisibility.
The event also connects to SDGs 11, 10, 13, and 5, highlighting the voices of the laundresses and their relationship with the Jequitinhonha River. In this way, it creates a space for listening, memory, and accessible heritage education, reinforcing the right to the city and the importance of popular culture as a tool for urban justice. Aligned with these goals, the initiative seeks to mobilize the municipal government, departments, and councils, ensuring broad community participation. This represents a first step toward creating conditions for the right to build a fairer and more sustainable city for all.
