The panel “Smart Cities in the Amazon: Digital Innovation and Territorial Justice” will focus on the case study of Porto Velho, highlighting the challenges and possibilities of adapting the city to the smart city concept. The capital of Rondônia, characterized by its vast territorial extension, communities accessible only by waterways, diverse population, and deep social inequalities, presents a complex reality that challenges the application of conventional urban innovation models.
The debate proposes a critical and inclusive approach to digital innovation, exploring how low-cost technologies, open data, participatory mapping, and collaborative platforms can be leveraged to strengthen public management, expand citizen participation, and reduce inequalities in access to urban services.
Held in an online format, the event is part of the Conexões GPCAS debate series, organized by the Amazonian Cities Research Group: Sustainability and Technological Innovation (UNIR), bringing together professionals working directly on the topic, aiming to promote reflection on how urban intelligence should combine technical efficiency with community participation, territorial justice, and digital solutions focused on social transformation.
