From Plans to Practice Urban Planning in Brazil, Theory Meets Action

This proposal is fully aligned with Urban October’s mission to raise awareness and inspire action towards sustainable urban development. The lecture will explore how urban planning in Brazil and Latin America is shifting from theoretical plans to practical solutions, emphasizing the tools, challenges, and innovations along this journey. Using real-world examples, it will showcase approaches such as land value capture, participatory planning, and data-driven decision-making, highlighting how these contribute to more inclusive, climate-resilient, and people-centred cities. Special attention will be given to experimental microurbanism as a method for rapidly testing and refining public policies, bridging theory and practice while addressing the challenges of climate resilience, gender equality, and sustainable urban transformation—in direct resonance with the 2025 Urban October themes of Urban Crisis Response and People-Centred Smart Cities.
