Planning and managing municipal systems for protected areas

We can find countless benefits for in nature. It regulates the temperature and rainfall, improves air quality, supplies us with food and pharmaceuticals, as well as leisure, just to name a few (SDGs 3, 6, 13, 14 and 15). Thus, it is indisputable that green areas (parks, public squares, etc.) and protected areas (Conservation Units) are a key aspect to make cities more inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Green and protected areas are crucial for the well-being as they provide places for exercise, leisure and socialisation (SDG 3). The preservation of green areas in the urban fabric, ensuring that they are accessible to all neighbourhoods and to everyone, is a major management and planning challenge.
