Opennig Ceremony

The opening event of the 2020 Urban Circuit will kick off the works for the month of October - cities month!

Participating in the event are the Executive Director of UN-Habitat, regional representatives for Latin America and the Caribbean and Africa and representatives of the offices of UN-Habitat Brazil and Lusophone Africa (Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe), who will address the public on the global agendas of sustainable urban development (New Urban Agenda and Agenda 2030), COVID-19 in the urban world and the work of UN-Habitat in the global context and in each of the participating countries.

Since 2018, UN-Habitat Brazil has been organizing Circuito Urbano: an initiative to provide institutional support and visibility for events organized by various actors to celebrate Urban October - a period that begins on World Habitat Day (the first Monday of the month, which falls on October 5 this year) and ends on World Cities Day (October 31).

Through Circuito Urbano, we promote debates on the themes of Urban October - which change every year - encourage and bolster the exchange of experiences and knowledge, providing visibility to our cities, their actors, challenges and proposals.

Urban October always features two themes selected to stimulate the debate between various sectors on how to make life in cities better for everyone. In 2020, World Habitat Day will address the theme of "Housing for Everyone: A Better Urban Future" and World Cities Day will focus on "Valuing Our Communities and Cities."

In 2018 and 2019, we had a total of roughly 300 registered events, coming from almost every state in Brazil. In 2020, in its third edition, with the COVID-19 pandemic and the transfer of interactions to the virtual world, Circuito Urbano also had to adapt. In order to make the most of the online modality, Circuito Urbano crossed the Atlantic and expanded to the African Countries of Portuguese Official Language (PALOP) that also have UN-Habitat offices. With this, we will have the opportunity this year to exchange experiences and knowledge with five other countries - Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe.

Circuito Urbano 2020 will focus on the theme “Post-COVID-19 Cities: Dialogues between Brazil and Lusophone Africa” and the events will address issues raised by World Habitat Day and World Cities Day as sub-themes.

There will be more than 180 events throughout the month of October. Keep an eye on the events schedule and don't miss this unique opportunity!
