When we talk about urban regeneration, what exactly do we mean? Is it about bringing back what once existed, repairing what has been damaged, or creating something new? And can urban regeneration really be understood simply as a series of interventions aimed at improving and renewing cities? Studying regeneration in living organisms introduces us to key biological concepts, including cellular memory, regenerative capacity, the molecular signals that initiate and regulate regeneration, and the interactions between individual cells, tissues, and the organism as a whole. These concepts, in turn, raise important questions about how cities retain their memory, activate their regenerative potential, and undergo transformation while maintaining continuity with their past. This talk offers a fresh perspective on urban regeneration through the lens of biology. By moving beyond conventional interpretations, it invites us to rethink regeneration not simply as a process of physical renewal, but as a complex relationship between continuity and change.
