Under the theme "Adequate Housing for All through the Mainstreaming of Innovative Building Systems," Nelson Mandela University will bring together scholars, policymakers, built environment professionals and partners to explore collaborative pathways towards inclusive, sustainable and resilient human settlements. Hosted by the department of Building and Human Settlement Development (BHSD), in partnership with the MandelaUni Institute for Sustainable Futures (MISF), the CIB Working Commission 110 on Affordable Housing and Informal Settlements, and the CSIR STI4SHS Cluster on the Culture of Innovation, the World Cities Day Commemorative Webinar will take place virtually via Zoom on Friday, 30 October 2026, 09:00 to 13:00 (SAST). The programme will feature a moderated opening plenary with invited keynote speakers, followed by parallel sessions led by panelists and discussants. These sessions will examine key dimensions of mainstreaming innovative building systems to advance quality, safe, climate-resilient and affordable housing. Discussions will address policy and regulatory frameworks, construction materials and markets, financing mechanisms for non-conventional building systems, skills gaps and curriculum enhancement, as well as social acceptance and end-user requirements. A closing plenary will synthesize key insights, identify opportunities for collaboration and highlight practical pathways towards mainstreaming innovative building systems in the delivery of adequate housing for all.
