What makes a city feel like home? Not the height of its towers, but the small assurances of everyday life: a safe street, a neighbour who looks out for you, a home where dignity can take root. World Habitat Day invites us to look beyond urban growth and ask what kind of life our cities make possible. This makes Malaysia’s National Observance of World Habitat Day 2026 in Putrajaya especially meaningful. As the nation’s administrative capital, Putrajaya is where decisions are made that shape the places people call home. The observance reminds us that city plans ultimately shape the lives unfolding within them. The Honourable Minister of Housing and Local Government, who also serves as President of the UN-Habitat Assembly, will grace the occasion. Friends and partners will gather to renew a shared commitment to adequate housing and communities where people can live with security, dignity and a sense of belonging. We will also present the Malaysia Scroll of Honour Award to individuals and organisations whose work has made a difference to the communities they serve. Their example reminds us that a city’s finest achievement is not simply what it builds, but whether people can build a good life there.
