The NGO Committee on Sustainable Development-NY, together with the UN Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Sendai Stakeholders Engagement Mechanism (SEM), Permanent Mission of Nepal to the UN (tbc), UN-Habitat NYO (Invited), and the UN/DESA NGO Major Group Urban Cluster, along with our partner organizations, is observing the UN International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction's 2026 theme: "Resilience Starts at Home."  This aligns with our support and commitment to advancing sustainable urbanization through the High-Level Meeting in the UN General Assembly on effective Implementation of the UN’s New Urban Agenda (2016-2036), which focuses on adequate, safe and affordable housing, and the UN 2030 Agenda, with a particular emphasis on Sustainable Development Goal 11: making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, and resilient. This is especially relevant following the 2026 UN-Habitat World Urban Forum 13 in Baku.  We will share initiatives and insights related to the calls to action and commitments to raising global awareness of the importance of investing in resilient housing, elevating the role of the private sector in reducing housing-related risk, and empowering vulnerable communities to take risk-informed actions to protect and strengthen their resilience to “Leave No One Behind."
