A community-led awareness walk through Zamalek documenting the impact of commercial urbanization on green spaces and heritage. The tour contrasts three models: 1. Al-Andalus Garden - A positive, surviving model of a public green space with no construction that still holds the memory of the 157 year old district of Zamalek as “plants garden” designed in the 19th century khedival Cairo, yet currently closed to the public. 2. Al- Masala Garden - A negative model showing how upgrading without environmental planning destroys public green space and compromises the right of future generations to a clean environment. 3. Al- Zohriya Garden - A community case study where residents led an advocacy campaign with official complaints to save one of the last historic natural heritage sites, 158 years old, from turning into a commercial complex of shops, cafes and hotel, demanding sustainable development that respects both environment, heritage and community participation. Community engagement efforts resulted in a Parliamentary request for information, a lawsuit, media coverage and an online petition with more than 11 thousand signatures. We use Zamalek as a case study to show that true urban regeneration must balance development with climate resilience, heritage preservation, and public green spaces.
