The event “Urban Land Conflicts and the Defense of Traditional Communities” aims to discuss how the right to the city and dignified housing for traditional groups in Pelotas, RS, has been threatened by recent dynamics of real estate speculation and the marginalization—or even criminalization—of these communities. Organized by the Cidades Médias research group of the Postgraduate Program in Architecture and Urbanism at UFPel, the event brings to the forefront the voices of leaders from the Kilombo Urbano Ocupação Canto de Conexão, an occupation in downtown Pelotas, and the NGO Cuidando de Nós, formed by residents and collaborators of the Passo dos Negros community. The discussion will also explore strategies to protect these communities’ right to remain in their territories.
