The UNH Urban October event 2025 is organized under the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology (JKUAT) Centre for Urban Studies (CUSt), which signed a MOU with UNHabitat in 2013. The event will focus on CUSt Master of Sustainable Urban Development (MSUD) and doctoral programmes research. Event Content: CUSt will host an online seminar to showcase student research related to urban crises response and people-centered smart cities, which are the 2025 themes of World Habitat Day and World Cities Day, respectively. MSUD studio research projects to be presented in the seminar are therefore related to climate change as a present urban crisis, and the planning of smart cities in Kenya, as follows: 1. Ngong Town: Creating A Climate Smart City (2022-2027). This research investigated and proposed solutions focused on: • human settlement and physical infrastructure • spatial planning of Ngong Town • Urban governance structure of Ngong Town • Natural resources, environment, and urban agriculture • Water management and sanitation • the economy of Ngong Town 2. Limuru Town: Smart City Ecological Planning. This research investigated and proposed solutions focused on: • Systems of natural areas as the basis of Urban Ecological Planning. • Effective management of ecological systems. • Ecological Network Management Strategies for guiding decisions and ecosystem services within local and national regulatory contexts. The seminar will comprise presentations of existing works and a Q/A discussion segment. Following the presentations, there will be a recognition and profiling of relevant scholarly works published by CUSt students and faculty. Expected Event Outcomes: •Showcasing of JKUAT/MSUD scholarly contributions to sustainable urban development through research and practice. •Encouragement of data-driven discourse and debate on critical urban issues in Africa and other developing countries. •Invitation of opportunities for collaboration & partnerships for further research or project implementation.
