"Between Concrete and Gesture: Where Does LIBRAS Belong in the Urban Landscape?" proposes an immersion into the linguistic and cultural inclusion of the Deaf community in cities. With the subtitle "A deep dive into what exists and what is missing in urban territories for deaf culture to flourish," the event focuses on the invisibility of Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS), going beyond physical accessibility.
The format combines an artistic and participatory approach. The event begins with a poetry performance in LIBRAS, followed by a bilingual (LIBRAS/Portuguese) discussion circle with Deaf activists.
The central activity is a collective mapping action, where participants will identify, on a city map, the presence and absence of LIBRAS. To conclude, the experiences and data collected will be transformed into a short documentary, creating a visual and political manifesto.
The main approach seeks to confront urban inequality that silences part of the population, fostering active participation of civil society to generate knowledge and valuable tools that can inspire change. The event aligns with the theme of Urban Circuit 2025, "Confronting Urban Challenges: Pathways to Just and Sustainable Cities," by giving voice and visibility to the Deaf community and showing that a just city is one that celebrates its linguistic and cultural diversity.
