Event Title: AI and Remote Sensing in Risk Management: The Case of Juiz de Fora in Disaster Prevention Description: In a scenario where disasters have already affected 5.9 million Brazilians and caused R$ 28.5 billion in losses in early 2025 alone, urban resilience has become an urgent priority. How can cities harness technology to anticipate extreme climate events? In this online lecture/workshop, the Sub-Secretariat for Civil Protection and Defense of Juiz de Fora will present how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Remote Sensing are revolutionizing strategic planning and the actions of disaster prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. We will demonstrate, in practice, the use of innovative tools such as: AI-powered video monitoring of flood-risk areas, development of applications on the Google Earth Engine platform to track construction and land movement in real time, and automated citizen service systems. The results speak for themselves: despite being the 9th Brazilian municipality with the highest number of risk areas, Juiz de Fora has gone 5 years without fatalities from natural disasters.
