The event “Adequate Housing in Montes Claros: Challenges and Possible Pathways” will be held online, with a live broadcast on the Urban Circuit YouTube channel, lasting up to two hours.
Participants will include popular architect and urban researcher Hêdu Ribeiro, representatives from the social movements MTD and MTST, and the Municipal Secretariat for Social Development of Montes Claros.
The initiative is grounded in the understanding of the right to adequate housing according to UN principles, which define it not merely as a roof over one’s head, but as a safe, accessible space with infrastructure and cultural appropriateness. In Montes Claros, this right represents a multifaceted challenge, shaped by the complex interaction among the State, civil society, and social movements. Civil society, often through self-construction, demonstrates resilience in the face of housing precarity;
The State acts by implementing programs and policies that do not always meet demand effectively; and social movements highlight gaps and develop alternative proposals.
The event seeks to promote dialogue among these actors, reflecting on realistic and future possibilities for the realization of the right to adequate housing in the city.
