The selected lecture, “The Right to the City in Practice: Expanding Equitable Access to Basic Sanitation and Decent Housing,” is aligned with the thematic axis Urban Inequality Reduction.
The event is strongly connected to the central theme of the Urban Circuit, as it will address some of the most pressing issues present in nearly all Brazilian cities, such as solid waste management, public lighting, climate change, and urban mobility. These topics stand out for having viable solutions through efficient management and well-structured public policies, making them highly relevant for a discussion that will bring together public managers and decision-makers. Brazilian cities face a challenging reality marked by social inequality, housing deficits, inadequate sanitation, and territorial exclusion. As urbanization continues to expand, it becomes increasingly urgent to rethink urban development models based on social justice, sustainability, and the right to the city.
Reducing urban inequalities requires integrated actions and public policies that acknowledge the social and territorial diversity of urban centers. Spatial segregation, for instance, remains one of the most evident features of large cities, where peripheral areas often lack basic services while central regions concentrate investments.
