The event will address urban and social inequalities as manifested in children’s public play spaces, based on the report “Public Squares Report: Which Child Has the Right to Play? Social, Urban, and Racial Inequalities in the Squares of Rio de Janeiro.” The discussion will focus on analyzing the impact of territorial, racial, and economic segregation on both access to and the quality of play spaces, while promoting a constructive debate on strategies and public policies for building fairer cities for all children.
By exposing the disparities in the quality and accessibility of public squares, the event reveals how social inequalities shape children’s everyday urban experiences—marked by the lack of territorial resources for free play, community bonding, and contact with nature. This results in an altered form of childhood development, contrary to the principles of the Statute of the Child and Adolescent, as play becomes confined to domestic spaces and increasingly replaced by screen time—digital environments that remain insufficiently regulated to guarantee children’s full rights.
The proposed discussion goes beyond diagnosis, seeking to generate practical proposals and solutions that help reduce segregation and build truly democratic and accessible public spaces, where the right to play is a reality for every child—regardless of their postal code or the color of their skin.
