This panel will address how municipalities can play a direct role in mitigating methane emissions from the urban solid waste sector, where local governments hold a decisive responsibility. With a Global Warming Potential (GWP) more than 80 times greater than CO₂ over a 20-year period, reducing methane emissions is one of the most effective ways to advance climate goals. In this context, strengthening local governance and exchanging best practices among cities are essential strategies. The panel will feature presentations from the City of Florianópolis, showcasing its initiative for managing and recycling urban organic waste through composting, and from Ponta Grossa Ambiental, presenting its Biogas Thermoelectric Plant (UTB), which converts organic waste into energy. Following these presentations, a debate will include representatives from Instituto Pólis and the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MMA), bringing their perspectives on public policies and local governance for emissions mitigation. The event will highlight the leadership of cities in responding to the climate crisis, emphasizing the importance of local solutions to foster more resilient and sustainable urban environments. It also aims to contribute to strengthening multisectoral cooperation for COP30, reinforcing the role of Brazilian municipalities in implementing concrete mitigation actions.
