The municipality of Linhares, the largest in territorial extension in Espírito Santo, embodies the contradictions inherent in urban occupation driven by industrial and agricultural development. Its territory, part of the Doce River basin, is recognized both for its vast production of coffee, cocoa, and export fruits, and for the severe socio-environmental impacts caused by the arrival of mining waste from Samarco in 2015. Within these contexts, the dynamics of urban occupation unfold through the lenses of spatial segregation and the erasure of riverside populations. In order to bring critical reflection and potentialities of the territory closer together, IPOU is based on collective moments of sharing—of food, poems, research, and other experiences. Our opening picnic will include technical guidance on adopting sustainable practices and on reconnecting with the seasonality of food. The crafting of “poetic bottles” and the public intervention are hallmarks of the collective, proposing interaction between poets, original literary production, and the recycling of long-neck bottles, onto which poems are pasted and then distributed freely in public spaces. Anyone passing by may take a bottle home for free. Finally, two researchers dedicated to the study of urban occupation in Linhares and its socio-environmental consequences will share their analyses.
