UN-Habitat will be inaugurating the newly rehabilitated the iconic Al Yarmouk Park in West Mosul in the presence of UN-Habitat’s Regional Director, Head of Iraq Programme, local authorities and donors. Severely affected by the war with ISIL, the park was reduced in 2019 to a bowl of dust, beset with garbage, debris and weeds, and misused by local youth and vandals. With generous funding by the European Union, the team embarked on a ambitious transformation project that comprised of the landscaping, construction of sports fields, open-air gym and running track, rehabilitation of a community hall, layout of an irrigation network fed by renewable energy, planting of over 1,200 trees, bushes and flowers, installation of playgrounds for children and gazebos for picnics, public facilities. The park, which measures 67,000 sqm, is fully accessible to people with disabilities and has dedicated areas for toddlers, children, families, youth and elderly.
