A home can only be considered adequate when residents have access to safe, reliable, accessible and affordable basic services. Without services such as water and sanitation, housing cannot fulfil its functions of protecting health, ensuring safety, supporting livelihoods and providing dignity and wellbeing. The New Urban Agenda emphasizes universal access to safe drinking water, sanitation and other basic services as integral components of sustainable urban development, while the Baku Call to Action highlights the need to better integrate housing with infrastructure, essential services and broader urban systems. Similarly, UN-Habitat's Strategic Plan 2026-2029 places adequate housing, land and basic services at the centre of sustainable urbanization and the transformation of informal settlements. The dialogue aims to: • Build a shared understanding of the main challenges, trends and opportunities related to integrated housing and water management; • Showcase country case studies that demonstrate the interconnections between housing and water management; • Examine how housing and water considerations can be connected through planning, programme design, financing, implementation and long-term service delivery; and • Generate actionable recommendations to inform discussions of the Open-Ended Intergovernmental Expert Working Group on Adequate Housing for All (OEWG-H) and strengthen collaboration within and beyond UN-Habitat.
