The main goal of the panel discussion is to promote knowledge exchange and dialogue between University of Glasgow researchers, research project partners and policy makers around sustainable housing policy responses to the COVID 19 pandemic. The specific goals of the panel discussion are:
• Examine emergency responses implemented by selected countries to safeguard people’s right to housing during the crisis and lessons learnt
• Discuss possible longer term strategies to address inequalities and provide adequate and sustainable housing to vulnerable communities
The panel will be made up by College of Social Sciences researchers and project partners as well as policy makers representing cities in Latin America, Africa and Asia. Speakers from selected countries will be invited to prepare a short presentation on emergency responses implemented by governments to safeguard people’s right to housing and lessons learnt. This will be followed by a panel discussion on the necessary long term approaches to address housing inequalities. The final part of the event will consist of a Q&A session which will allow participants to submit questions to the panel.

- • Robert Lewis-Lettington (Chair) – UN-Habitat, Chief of Section for the Land, Housing and Shelter Urban Practices Branch
- • Professor Vittal Katikireddi – Deputy Director of the NIHR Global Health Research Group on Social Policy and Health Inequalities, University of Glasgow. Vittal’s research examines the impact of the Brazilian public housing programme on health outcomes.
- • Professor Ken Gibb – Director of the UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence, University of Glasgow. Ken leads a research project charting housing policy changes generated by the COVID-19 pandemic
- • Dr Josephine Mwongeli – University of Rwanda. Josephine is currently working with the GCRF Centre for Sustainable, Healthy and Learning Cities and Neighbourhoods (SHLC) exploring the Rwandan cities of Kigali and Huye
- • Rajiv Ranjan Mishra – Director General, National Mission for Clean Ganga Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India
- • Dr Mauro Sanchez – Epidemiologist performing research activities with the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Brazil.
