Engaging Youth in E-Waste Management

Beşiktaş Municipality emphasizes the importance of managing electronic waste responsibly. Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), or e-waste, includes electric and electronic items that have reached the end of their lifecycle. Many of these products contain hazardous materials like lead and mercury, posing risks to human health and the environment if not disposed of properly. To tackle this issue, the municipality has implemented the "Recycle and Win" initiative, allowing residents to request e-waste collection through various channels. Large and small household appliances, telecommunications equipment, and consumer electronics are collected, ensuring proper sorting and recycling. Youth and children play a critical role in this effort. Recently, the municipality organized an event at Hamiyet Gerçek Primary School, bringing together students to raise awareness about e-waste management. By engaging younger generations, the municipality instills a sense of responsibility toward environmental issues. Schools and community organizations are encouraged to educate children about the importance of recycling. Young people can advocate for sustainability, influencing their families and peers to participate in local initiatives.
