Ecovillage, Territorial Planning, and Real Estate Innovation in Brazil

The concept of ecovillage originated within sectors of international financial capital as a way to promote sustainable models of human settlements. In Brazil, there is no federal legislation that formally regulates this type of real estate development, though a few municipalities have included ecovillages in their territorial planning—such as the case of São José dos Campos/SP. The theme of the event is the role of ecovillages in territorial planning, with a focus on reflecting on innovation in real estate business models in Brazil. Sérgio Gonçalves will present the work “Ecovillage and Innovation in Real Estate Business within the Territorial Planning of São José dos Campos/SP.” This will be followed by Ronaldo Madureira’s presentation, “Ecovillage Vargem Grande: Innovation, Legal Framework, and Community Management for Planetary Health and the Water-Energy-Food Nexus in São José dos Campos/SP.” Next, Edvaldo Amorim will share university extension experiences related to the territorial planning of a riverside community located within the urban fabric of São José dos Campos/SP, which, though not formally conceived as an ecovillage, holds all of its defining characteristics. The event will conclude with a debate among the presenters, open to audience participation via YouTube.
