Advancing inclusive urban development
David Satterthwaite has spent more than 50 years advocating for improved housing and living conditions for marginalized urban residents. His work, including the influential book Squatter Citizen, has drawn attention to the challenges faced by slum dwellers and has informed more inclusive approaches to urban development.
David’s work with organizations like Slum/Shack Dwellers International and SPARC has advanced equitable research and urban policies that prioritize the needs of vulnerable populations. His contributions to global reports, such as the Brundtland Report and multiple IPCC assessments, have shaped discussions around sustainable urban development.
“The award means greater visibility and learning for the amazing work done by our partners – partners that include local governments and grassroots organizations and their federations, and of course it includes the Asian Coalition for Housing Rights and Slum/Shack Dwellers International, from whom we all learn so much,” said David Satterthwaite.
Through his partnerships and extensive body of work, David continues to contribute to global efforts to address urban poverty and promote more inclusive cities.
