Data-driven Circular Financing in Cities: How WaCT implementation can help Indian cities in circular investments on MSW

The data on solid and plastic waste generated from our cities is inconsistent and there is no standard methodology to develop a solid and plastic waste inventory. This data gap increases the challenge of developing appropriate strategies and systems for managing waste. Under the Waste Wise Cities (WWC) programme, UN-Habitat has developed the Waste Wise Cities Tool (WaCT), based on SDG indicator 11.6.1 parameters, to support cities and countries in undertaking a comprehensive diagnostic of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) to aid scientific and evidence-based development of projects and investments. As part of the Waste Wise Cities, UN-Habitat supports cities in establishing better waste and resource management strategies, creating business and livelihood opportunities, and transiting towards a circular economy. Thus, the two-hour workshop aimed to capacitate stakeholders on data-driven circular financing and how cities can undertake the implementation of WaCT for evidence-based planning and implementation to reduce GHG emissions and create sustainable, carbon-neutral, inclusive cities and towns.
