Climate change is increasingly affecting cities and communities, reinforcing the need to rethink housing, urban planning, and the quality of the environments in which people live. Adequate housing also involves access to healthy environments, collective spaces, social ties, and opportunities for meaningful participation in community life. As part of Urban October 2026, the CCD HIS SP Pit Stop will bring together Camila Albuquerque, a forest engineer and postdoctoral researcher at PUC-Campinas, and Gislene Sales, a biologist, PhD, teacher at SEDUC-SP, and pedagogical advisor. Under the theme “Cultivating Belonging: Education, Territory and Socio-Environmental Justice,” the speakers will explore how education, community initiatives, and shared spaces can strengthen belonging and encourage the recognition, appropriation, and care of the places where people live. Drawing on experiences in peripheral neighborhoods of Sorocaba and Campinas, the discussion will highlight the role of community gardens and other collective spaces in fostering social ties and socio-environmental justice. The event will feature a joint presentation followed by a moderated discussion with the audience, creating a space for dialogue on housing, education, territory, and more inclusive and resilient communities, and will be held in a hybrid format in Portuguese.
