The “School of Popular Latin American Music” project was born out of the “Inclusive Cities and Communities of Solidarity” initiative which aims to generate community spaces for intercultural dialogue and create mechanisms to break stereotypes. This project allows for the participation of boys, girls, and adolescents between the ages of 8 and 14 years old and aims to offer these classes to local migrants, refugees, and children from local host community (Cotocollao). Apart from the technical vocal classes, with an emphasis on regional songs and percussion classes, the school aims to formulate diverse ensembles of Latin American music tailored to the age and experience of the participants. The music school began on July 19th, 2021 and will be carried out until the last week of September. Classes are held in Casa Somos, a local community center, near the central plaza of Cotocollao. For the final ceremony, the music school will hold an artistic presentation during which students will perform small musical ensembles promoting popular songs and music from Ecuador and Venezuela. This project aims to unite migrants and local community members through friendship and music.
