Who takes care when territories collapse? Where do the responses come from when official planning structures fail to anticipate them? How can we recognize and learn from those who resist, day by day, the impacts of climate change? These are the guiding questions of the event “Climate in Ruins, Territories in Action.” The activity proposes an encounter between two territorial experiences profoundly affected by the effects of climate change in contemporary Brazil: drought in the Amazon and flooding in Rio Grande do Sul. The discussion starts from the acknowledgment that it is within communities—often rendered invisible—that the most devastating impacts are concentrated. In such contexts, the absence or inefficiency of the State compels territories to develop their own forms of response, care, and reconstruction. By bringing together two guests with complementary trajectories (Sharlene Melanie, PhD in Design and photographer working with Indigenous and riverside communities in northern Brazil, and Leonardo Brawl Marques, professor at UFRGS and coordinator of TransLAB.URB, active in territories affected by floods in southern Brazil) the event seeks to create a space for committed and situated listening to territories that usually remain on the margins of decision-making processes. It invites participants to reflect on how climate action can be grounded in local knowledge and territorial diversity as a means to confront the historical asymmetries that shape our cities.
