Urban centers host the social and economic dynamics of everyday life and often feature better infrastructure than other parts of the city. Despite this, recent trends indicate depopulation and degradation, reflecting an exclusive urbanization model. On the other hand, urban expansion continues into peripheral areas, which are often unsuitable for occupation, such as hillsides, valley bottoms, and riverbanks. Given this reality, the potential of central areas should be leveraged to address the climate crisis and reduce inequalities, thereby expanding the right to a just and sustainable city. The event will present examples from central areas in Brazilian cities, highlighting data on their potential for equitable climate adaptation. Following this, discussions will focus on how the Ministry of Cities has approached this challenge through an integrated urban development strategy centered on social inclusion and resilience. Proposals and initiatives will be showcased that aim to revitalize central areas while incorporating a climate perspective into integrated urban interventions, developed through federal government programs, civil society actions, and international cooperation. Finally, the event will highlight legislative initiatives promoting the requalification of central urban areas with a forward-looking perspective.
