City and Environment: Sanitation for the right to housing and the city

The right to housing is guaranteed by several national and international institutions, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and the Brazilian Constitution (1988), which considers it a fundamental right since the year 2000. For the Habitat Agenda (1996), an adequate house is one that offers healthy living conditions, security, basic infrastructure (sanitation and energy) and public services (health, education, public transport), related to the right to the city, since infrastructure and urban services must be guaranteed, along with the unitary physical structure housing and the equitable distribution of opportunities. One of the obstacles to realize the right to housing lies in the precarious access to sanitation. Given the importance of the theme, this event will address the subtopic: “Housing for all: a better urban future”, based on reflections on the role of basic sanitation, on the scale of housing and the city, for the right to housing and to the city.
