Butterflies in the City is a youth-led, citizen science and community engagement activity organised by Nadora Ecoshield Foundation to mark World Habitat Day 2026 and promote biodiversity-friendly, climate-resilient urban green spaces in Abuja. The activity will bring young people, students, nature enthusiasts and community members together to explore the importance of urban green spaces for biodiversity, climate resilience and sustainable urban development. Participants will receive practical training in butterfly identification, ecological observation, citizen-science data collection and basic habitat assessment, followed by a guided butterfly and habitat survey in a selected Abuja urban green space. Participants will document butterflies, vegetation, habitat characteristics and human disturbances, generating baseline information on urban biodiversity while developing practical environmental monitoring skills. The activity responds to increasing pressure on Abuja’s urban green spaces and concerns about environmental resilience, including recent flooding in parts of the Federal Capital Territory. It will promote community engagement in understanding, protecting and sustainably managing urban green spaces as important ecological infrastructure. Importantly, the event will launch the Abuja Butterfly Club’s long-term butterfly monitoring programme.
