The so-called "Old Town" (Nordstadt) is the most densely populated part of the city, with about 9000 inhabitants. Due to urban planning grievances, the neighborhood was heavily burdened by heavy traffic and threatened to deteriorate. Consequently, the neighborhood was redesigned in 1984 to 1994 as part of a state programme to improve the living environment, by installing green and public spaces, calming traffic and renovate facades. No one would have imagined one of the most beautiful street, the Heerstraße with its cherry blossoms would emerge in the process. The hurdles and successes of this process will be explained in a guided tour by urban planner Brigitte Denkel.
