Responding to the 2025 World Cities Day theme, “Transformation and Development towards People-Centered Smart Cities,” this initiative addresses a central global challenge: leveraging technologies like AI for urban transformation while ensuring equitable benefits for all citizens. AI is a powerful driver for modernizing governance, improving public services, and enhancing urban resilience. However, it also presents challenges, making the mission of ensuring people-centered development a critical global priority. China’s practices offer valuable insights for this global dialogue. The report Future Cities Advisory Outlook 2025: AI and Cities, prepared by UN-Habitat China, analyzes how AI can empower urban transformation to serve citizens' well-being. It synthesizes China's innovative practices and proposes a roadmap for AI-enabled sustainable urban development. Furthermore, Beijing Future Science City stands as a demonstrative model. Its 15-year development, adhering to “people-centered and ecology-first” values, showcases breakthroughs in smart infrastructure and digital governance. The report on its practices provides a replicable “Chinese solution” for implementing the UN 2030 Agenda. Anchored in the World Cities Day theme, the launch of these reports aims to advance the people-centered smart city concept. The objectives are to: elaborate on how to ensure technology enhances citizens' quality of life; share transformative insights from Chinese cities; promote international dialogue on urban development principles; foster collaborative partnerships and South-South cooperation; and provide actionable guidance for sustainable urban transformation, contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
