Article: THE CITY AND ITS POST-PANDEMIC COVID-19 CHALLENGES

Pandemics, throughout history, had effects on societies and affected the transformation of cities. The Black Death in the 14th century altered the character of urban spaces. Cholera transformed cities in the 19th century, in order to protect its inhabitants (García Novo, 2020). Now the COVID-19, whose epicenter of the origin of the virus was in the city of Wuhan (China), a metropolis of 11 million inhabitants, according to the WHO; it will also transform urban spaces. In this context, the cities in Peru are not alien to this reality. According to projections of the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics - INEI, by 2020, the city of Lima borders 11 million inhabitants (32% of the national population), data that make it the most populated city in the country. Thus, the article identifies the effects produced by COVID-19 in the cities of the country, to then address the challenges of the urban future.
