Cities worldwide are facing growing pressures from climate change, housing shortages, rapid urbanisation, ageing infrastructure and social inequality. Artificial intelligence is creating new opportunities to improve how cities are planned, managed and adapted to these challenges. From climate-risk modelling and infrastructure management to housing design, urban regeneration and public services, AI has the potential to support better decisions and more efficient use of resources. However, technological innovation does not automatically translate into better urban outcomes. Its effectiveness depends on reliable data, institutional capacity, affordability, responsible governance and meaningful community participation. To mark World Cities Day 2026, Sheher Saaz, in partnership with FutureARCH, is convening an international dialogue bringing together experts in urban planning, housing, architecture, infrastructure, complex systems, climate resilience and community development. The discussion will explore where AI can make a practical difference, where its limitations lie and how cities can adopt emerging technologies without overlooking the needs of vulnerable communities. The emphasis will be on practical experience, evidence-informed discussion and recommendations that can support real-world implementation.
