Aldeia do Espraiado, Tekoa Ara Hovy

For establishing Brazil’s first municipal indigenous village and providing secure, culturally appropriate housing, essential services and legal land tenure.

The Municipality of Maricá has advanced Indigenous rights, adequate housing and territorial security through the Aldeia do Espraiado – Tekoa Ara Hovy: the first Indigenous village established by a Brazilian municipality. The municipality provided the community with a permanent territory and developed a village featuring 13 traditional ocas, alongside a school, health post, cultural centre and other essential facilities.

By combining public investment, community participation and respect for traditional building practices, the initiative has strengthened access to housing, services, livelihoods and cultural expression, demonstrating how local governments can help address historical inequalities and advance inclusive urban development.
