As Ethiopia continues to advance its inclusive development agenda, housing remains central to building resilient communities. As displacement increasingly intersects with urban growth, service delivery, and local development, there is growing opportunity to strengthen approaches that promote inclusion, self-reliance, & community well-being. Adequate housing provides the foundation for improved livelihoods, social cohesion, & access to essential services. Ethiopia has made important progress in developing policies and practical approaches that support durable solutions for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugee inclusion. Continued collaboration among government institutions, local authorities, humanitarian and development partners, researchers, and affected communities can further strengthen and scale these efforts. In recognition of World Habitat Day 2026 under the theme “Adequate Housing for All,” UN-Habitat is convening an Urban Dialogue in Jigjiga, Somali Regional State, a region that has demonstrated notable progress in advancing durable solutions and refugee inclusion. Through initiatives promoting coexistence, service access, local integration, and development-oriented responses, the region offers valuable lessons for Ethiopia and beyond. The dialogue will bring together stakeholders to exchange experiences & strengthen partnerships. Discussions will focus on housing solutions, settlement planning and integration, community resilience, & multi-stakeholder collaboration, aiming to advance housing-centered durable solutions for IDPs, refugees, & host communities.
