Accelerating urban action for a carbon-free world

Insane global urbanization is seen as a major cause of climate change and Greenhouse gas emissions (GNGs), important of which being CO2 emissions. They are responsible for bulk of the health hazards in our urban settlements. Cities are responsible for about 70 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions stemming from transport, residential, commercial and industrial buildings, energy sources, and waste dumping sites. Timely actions are required to create sustainable, carbon-neutral, inclusive cities and towns by reducing these emissions through the collective proactive role played by the national, regional and local governments and organizations, communities, academic institutions, the private sector and all relevant stakeholders. United Nations World Habitat Day 2021, theming ‘accelerating urban action for a carbon-free world’, is focused on amplifying the global “Race to Zero” Campaign and UN-Habitat’s “Climate Action 4 Cities” and encourage local governments to develop actionable zero carbon plans that create more inclusive, resilient and sustainable cities and economies.
