Using Disaster Susceptibility Maps in Urban Planning

"Theme: Using Disaster Susceptibility Maps in Urban Planning With the accelerated process of climate change, the world is increasingly experiencing adverse events. This situation is particularly pronounced in Brazil, where haphazard urbanization since the 1970s led socially vulnerable families to seek alternative residence options. As the flatter and more valuable regions were occupied, the areas near watercourses and slopes became the only option for vulnerable families to establish their homes. Consequently, areas that were naturally susceptible to disasters and should not have been occupied became high-risk zones. In this context, we will explore the role of Disaster Susceptibility Maps as a valuable tool that can greatly assist public officials in planning the expansion of urban areas in their cities."
