The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the French Agency for AlUla Development (AfAlUla) jointly organised an Exploratory Walk with the Women of AlUla, bringing together local women and international participants from different age groups to explore the Villa Hegra centrality. Participants shared their experiences and perspectives on what makes streets and public spaces safe, accessible and comfortable, while identifying existing challenges and opportunities for improvement. The activity began with an introduction to the AlUla Walkable Neighbourhoods Programme (AWNP). Throughout the walk, participants used questionnaires and annotated maps to document physical barriers, valued spaces and potential improvements across four thematic areas: human-scale design, safety and accessibility, inclusive streetscapes, and climate resilience and thermal comfort. A post-walk workshop provided an opportunity to consolidate observations, identify priority issues and present group findings. The activity generated location-specific insights to inform potential pilot interventions aimed at improving neighbourhood walkability and advancing gender-responsive, context-sensitive urban planning and design in AlUla. It also strengthened women's participation in shaping their neighbourhoods and demonstrated a participatory approach that could be replicated in other areas of AlUla.
