World Habitat Day 2026 Observed in Rayerbazar, Dhaka “Universal Housing, Sustainable Urbanization" The urban informal community members described how extreme heat, waterlogging, heavy rainfall, and other climate-related stresses are making their living conditions increasingly difficult and unsafe. They said that during periods of extreme heat, they often cannot sleep comfortably in their homes. Waterlogging during heavy rainfall further worsens the situation, damaging household belongings, creating unhygienic conditions, and making movement within and outside the community difficult. Women and girls face particularly severe challenges in these circumstances. Climate crisis increases workload of women significantly during climate-related crises. Women are often responsible for arranging food, water, fuel, childcare, and other essential household needs even when their homes and surroundings are affected by extreme heat, rainfall, or waterlogging. The community members strongly emphasized the issue of climate finance and climate justice. They demanded greater transparency, accountability, and community participation in the allocation and use of climate funds. The participants called for safe, affordable, secure, and climate-resilient housing for low-income and informal-settlement communities. They demanded that government authorities take immediate action to improve housing conditions, drainage, water and sanitation facilities, green spaces, and other essential urban services.
