2020 Agenda: building resilient urban futures in the Global South

Sustainable, enduring, and inclusive development faces numerous challenges. The world's population has already surpassed the 8 billion mark, necessitating the expansion of areas for human settlements and resource acquisition. with projections indicating an increase to 68% by 2050. In the Latin American and Caribbean region, this percentage could rise to 81%, peaking at 85% in Brazil. The combination of rapid population growth and the increasing influx of people into urban centers reduces the feasibility of establishing well-planned urban networks. This, in turn, reduces the efficiency and effectiveness of infrastructure and public services. Unemployment, poverty, and hunger are on the rise, resulting in crises related to food, energy, humanitarian concerns, economics, and the environment. These crises demand ever-larger investments. As a result, this proposal seeks to enrich the public discourse on the need for integrated urban planning.
