Global suburbs and local initiatives: housing and agroecological production in Brazil and Mozambique

A dialogue will be held about the thresholds between rural and urban movements occurred in the Baixada Fluminense area (Brazil), as well as in Pemba and Mecuburi areas (Mozambique), thanks to the work of non-governmental organizations.

They deal with issues that involve the lack of visibility and absence of public policies, social evictions due to the urban sprawl; other topics consider the contributions to agroecological network building in creative economy and for areas adapted to peri-urban agricultural settlements; as well as promoting the economic development of poor communities in rural areas, mainly by delivering to young people the professional training to work on the countryside and for the housing construction for refugees, i.e.

people who arrive from territories in war situations and there are also victims of major environmental catastrophes caused by climate change. The webinar will introduce the current situations, initiatives and resistance experienced in both countries of the southern hemisphere. It will focus on the challenges of habitability, sustainability, livelihoods, agroecological production, human and economic development in areas of extreme poverty and in the post-pandemic context of COVID-19.
