Mayor of Kahramanmaraş since 2019, Mr Güngör has had to deal with the aftermath of the earthquakes that destroyed much of the city on 6 February 2023. 

Previously, Mr Güngör has been for 11 years the General Secretary of the Union of Turkish Municipality. Earlier, he was appointed Member of the Presidential Local Administration Policies Council by the Presidential Decree.
